What, Now to Get a Job You Already Need to Have a Job?

Claudia Ricci, Professor at University at Albany, SUNY, wrote about USAction’s campaign to end unemployment discrimination this weekend.

What, Now to Get a Job You Already Need to Have a Job?

Beverly Bowne, who lives in the Bronx, worked for 28 years as a billing coordinator for a printing company in New York City. And then in 2009, she and a number of other employees at the company — including her own supervisor — were laid off.

Bowne’s employer was hard hit by the recession. The company, like so many in the printing industry, is shriveling fast as internet communication replaces the need for printed materials.

For Bowne, the lay off was devastating. “I fell apart completely,” she said. “You have to go through the grieving process.” Bowne has spent the last two and a half years looking for work, sending out hundreds of resumes. Often, she gets the cold shoulder from prospective employers reacting to her grey hair and her age (she’ll be 60 next month.)

Now, she’s begun to see a new kind of snub — job ads on Careerbuilder.com from companies saying that applicants must already be employed in order to apply for the job. Bowne calls the ads “outright discrimination,” adding that these ads “remind me of the ‘Irish need not apply’ ads of our earlier history.”

Bowne isn’t the only one infuriated by the ads. The progressive activist orgranization USAction has now launched an on-line petition campaign to stop what they are calling an “outrageous” form of job discrimination.

If you haven’t taken action yet, join 25,000 in calling on major employment websites like Monster.com and CareerBuilder to refuse ads from companies that discriminate against unemployed workers: http://j.mp/nQNoDi.

Monster.com responds. Will they refuse ads that discriminate against unemployed workers?

Monster.com responded to our campaign and Act.ly petition to end discrimination by employees against unemployed workers. Monster.com claims to “strongly oppose discriminating vs. the unemployed”.

Thanks to Monster.com for responding and being willing to engage those who’ve signed on to our Act.ly petition asking them to refuse the ads of these companies.

But the question remains, if Monster.com “strongly opposes” discrimination, will they do the right thing and refuse ads from employers who openly do so?

We hope so.

If you do too, please sign the letter asking Monster.com and other major employment sites to REFUSE ads of employers who openly discriminate against unemployed Americans.

In the middle of a global economic recession, millions of people are unemployed for reasons they cannot control. Now we’ve learned that many companies are specifying in job advertisements that unemployed people cannot apply for open positions.

This is more than unfair to workers — it is devastating, and we urge you to refuse any such advertisements.

For Americans to get back on their feet, they can’t be chained to their involuntary status of unemployment. Please do your part in helping Americans get back to work

Alberta Darling’s Medicaid and Medicare Funeral

Medicaid and Medicare provide critical healthcare  to hundreds of thousands of Wisconsin residents.  Yet, Alberta Darling supports Paul Ryan’s radical plan to kill Medicaid and Medicare as we know it.  So Citizen Action of Wisconsin and allies decided to have a funeral at Darling’s office.

D.C. Rally @ Noon TODAY — Don’t Destroy the American Dream!

Today the U.S. House led by Speaker Boehner will take us closer to default by voting on a bill that can’t pass the Senate & that the President would veto.

They’re wasting America’s time.  Our country and the entire global economy is on the precipice of economic catastrophe.

We need to send a strong, clear message to Congress: Don’t Destroy the American Dream.

That’s why we’re rallying with MoveOn.org and the rest of our American Dream movement allies on the Capitol steps TODAY at Noon: http://j.mp/oiQ7ye

We need to keep the pressure on Congress to pass a clean increase in the debt ceiling and to fight back against cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.

Can you join us Thursday at noon on the East side of the Capitol steps? http://j.mp/oiQ7ye

Tell Congress: Don’t destroy America.

Last Friday night, House Republicans walked out of debt ceiling talks after making it 100% clear that they would rather see America default and the economy ruined than make millionaires or corporations pay one penny more in taxes.

Stock markets are dropping already. At many companies, hiring is on hold. And in eight days – we may have to stop mailing out social security checks, paying veterans benefits, and effectively shut down the federal government as America defaults on its debt.

But there’s still ONE chance to avoid calamity: Congress must vote NOW on a clean increase to the debt ceiling  – no spending cuts, no tax increases, no gimmicks.

ACTIONhttp://j.mp/ohzXuh

Just a clean vote that keeps the economy running and guarantees millions of working Americans won’t get caught in the partisan crossfire.

Emergency Call-In Day to Demand Democrats Stand Strong

USAction is joining with MoveOn.org and other progressive organizations to hold an emergency call-in day today.

If President Obama and Boehner reach a deal, Democrats in Congress will be under pressure to support it and they need to hear from you that a lopsided deal is unacceptable.  Will you call your senators and urge them to vote against a deal that cuts Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid benefits or a deal that doesn’t make corporations and the rich pay their fair share?

The easiest way to reach your members is to call the Congressional switchboard. CALL NOW! (202) 224-3121.

      Our message:

Senate Democrats have been strong so far, ruling out deals that slash programs for working families but do nothing to make the rich and corporations pay their fair share.  Now is when the rubber meets the road.  We need them to keep standing strong, even if the White House is supporting a terrible deal. Anything less would be a betrayal of the American people. A deal that trades immediate spending cuts for vague revenue increases to be named later is simply unacceptable.

Wine tasting protest of GOP Rep. Paul Ryan and his cruel cuts

Andy Kroll writes about USAction affiliate Citizen Action of Wisconsin’s protest in Mother Jones, Activists Bash Paul Ryan’s $350 Pinot Splurge with Faux Wine Tasting:

On Wednesday, the Wisconsin Republican’s constituents gave him a taste of his own Pinot, staging a faux wine-tasting protest at Ryan’s office in Racine, in southeast Wisconsin, to highlight what they saw as the congressman’s stunning hypocrisy. “The symbolism of Paul Ryan sipping outlandishly expensive wine at a fancy Washington bistro is in many ways more powerful than all the devastating statistics about his plan to destroy Medicaid and Medicare as we know them,” Robert Kraig, the executive director of Citizen Action of Wisconsin, said in a statement. “Ryan’s plan shifts precious public resources needed to make good on our national commitment to fund Medicaid and Medicare to the very people who can already afford to drink grossly overpriced wine—the wealthy and health insurance industry CEOs.”

Constituents to MI GOP Rep. Amash: Stay Away From My Medicaid

Yesterday, 56 seniors, workers and activists joined Michigan Citizen Action at a rally in Grand Rapids, MI to protest and ask Congressman Amash about his recent votes in support of cutting Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security.  For approximately 90 minutes MCA and allies rallied outside of the Gerald R. Ford Federal Building, despite the almost 100 degree temperatures.

Participants signed a petition that was faxed to Congressman Amash’s offices.  The petition language firmly opposed any budget proposals or agreements to raise the debt ceiling that include cuts to Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security.

5 hand-written letters to Congressman Amash were also collected and faxed, as well as personal videos from his constituents were filmed and posted to YouTube.

Check out the rest of the photos on MCA’s Facebook page.
