Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D), a progressive champion from Illinois, this week introduced The Emergency Jobs to Restore the American Dream Act. USAction endorsed the jobs bill immediately:
“We built the middle class by decisions we made together, as Americans,” said Alan Charney, USAction director of strategy and policy. “But today, working and middle-class families are struggling, while the rich get richer and at the expense of the rest of us. It’s up to us to fight for good jobs, strong communities and shared prosperity. Congresswoman Schakowsky’s bill will put America back to work.”
We need more leaders in Washington D.C. like Jan Schakowsky, unafraid to lead where others have failed and fight for what the American people and the American economy so desperately need, jobs to drive the economy back to where it belongs. That’s exactly what this bill does, as Jordan Howard writes in the Huffington Post:
The congresswoman said that her plan would create 2.2 million jobs and decrease the unemployment rate by 1.3 percent.
“If we want to create jobs, then create jobs,” Schakowsky said in a press release. “I’m not talking about “incentivizing” companies in the hopes they’ll hire someone, or cutting taxes for the so-called job creators who have done nothing of the sort. My plan creates actual new jobs.“

I am sitting here a layed off federal employment counselor cut by union bashing budget cuts in nj. I have 25 years of experience with programs like this. It is a winner idea. It surely would do great may turn it all around with continuation of the payroll tax holiday, and continuation of the 99 weeks of UI programs.
If you’re going to call yourselves “job creators” doesn’t that mean you have to take responsibility for the lack of jobs? I just finished a blog post about how I think we can motivate these “job creators” to do their duty. America needs clean energy jobs from renewable energy sources!! Furthermore, thousands of people could be given work that our nation desperately needs if only the Obama Administration would support a federal jobs program putting unemployed/under-employed people to work weatherizing/retrofitting our already existing housing stock! Additionally, all of these homes would permanently use less energy, thereby reducing our national energy consumption, and cutting green house emissions. We need to leave the fear-based, polluting technologies in the past. Look at what China has been doing in the areas of renewable energy – for instance, they are developing technologies that can convert plastic waste to energy!! Why aren’t we doing that here in the U.S?!? We need leadership and vision to turn away from the threats and corruption and greed; and turn instead towards a future that supports all Americans, not just the most selfish: the ones who have proven again, and again, that they don’t care at all about what happens to their own fellow citizens, or this precious planet that gives life to all of us!!
